Frequently Asked Questions

Engine  (194 cu. in.) Six Cylinder

Q.  What type of spark plugs and timing point is used in my engine.
A.
A C Type G -12 with gap setting of .024" timing is set for 12degrees BTDC
Bill Barker http://barkerville.net/vccachev/1931/specs1.htm has come up with
another method on his 31 Chevy web page. Changing the gap setting to .040"
and retiming to 18 degrees for smoother running engine especially when using
modern replacement A C - C86 spark plugs. Check out his web site for details
along with other tips and information.

Q.  What is the bore and stroke.
A.
Bore      3 5/16 "   Micrometer setting of  3.3125"
          Stroke   3 3/4 "

Q.  What is the breaker point setting.
A.
Adjust the gap to .018"

Q.  What is the correct setting for the intake and exhaust valves.
A.
The space between the rocker arm and the valve stem should be .006" for the
intake valves and .008" for the exhaust valves. This should be done with the
engine hot. The proper clearance for the exhaust valve stem guide is .002" to
.004" and the intake stem .0005" to .0025".

Q.  What is the correct head bolt tightening pattern.
A.
Tighten the head bolts in the following sequence using 75 lbs of torque.

           Front                               1                                Back of engine

Clutch

Q.   What is the clutch disk size for 1929 1-1/2 trucks.
A.
The correct size is 9" which was changed to 10 " in 1930 to reduce ware. I
believe all vehicles in 1929 were 9 inch.

 Manuals/Books

Q.  Where can I find repair/parts manuals for my car or truck.
A.
One good source is The Filling Station, http://www.fillingstation.com
Another source for a 1929-32 specific parts book is Bowtie Reproductions
the address is  7297 Maple St. Mentor, Ohio  44060, Ph. no. 1-440-9748384 .

Q.  Are books available on restoration of 29/30 Chevy vehicles.
A.
A good book with lots of information covering 1929 to around 1940 can be
found at Pro Antique auto Parts, 50 King Spring Road  Windsor Locks,
Ct.  06096  Ph. no. 1-860-623-8274 . Book title  Chevy Six  which is a reprint
of a 912 page manual written in 1940 covering design, construction and
maintenance. I highly recommend this book because of the wealth of
information it contains. Also available are many other books on restoration
         and picture books of vehicles.

How to

Q.  How can I remove frozen bolts and rusted nuts.
A.

During restoration of my truck many of the mounting hardware were rusted
so badly the only recourse was to hack saw nuts from the bolts. In most
cases you can apply some heat to the part with a propane torch which will
usually break the bond between nuts and bolts. For bolts frozen for example
into engine blocks or any other bolt/nut combination a good penetrating
lubricating oil can work well. One good source is Kroil Oil from Kano
         Labs,
http://www.kanolabs.com . There are other good penetrating oils like
Liquid Wrench available from hardware stores. These penetrating oils work
better than WD-40 for loosing frozen hardware. I only use WD-40 for
lubrication and rust prevention of parts. Penetrating oils don't work instantly,
soak parts for a a day or two giving the oil a chance to migrate in between
         parts.
